Yesterday, I received an email from 2 students asking for my opinion on the main cause(s) of excessive plastic bag use in Singapore. This was my reply to them.

With today’s advances in technology and design, you no longer have to compromise on reduced performances and comfort when opting to buy a green car. Today, green cars are slowly becoming no different from regular cars. Today, I will share on 5 of the top selling green cars.
The Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi 95, is an extremely popular model that has been re-worked to produce an outstandingly low carbon emission of 94g/km, averaging an impressive 80.7 mpg.

In response to the question “what if climate change is not real”, Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Governor of California, said
“If climate change doesn’t exist, the question I ask you is: how does cleaning up our environment and spurring economic development toward new ”green” industries harm us?

In the midst of dealing with the aftermath of the 2011 earthquakes and tsunamis, Japan faces the challenge of finding uses for the 25 million tons of rubble (equivalent to half the amount of household waste generated in Japan annually) created as a result of the disaster.

If you are a green-goer and want to own a “green home”, do beware of homes that are falsely labeled as “green”. Do your checks before making your “green home” purchase. Not only would it ensure that you get what you are looking for, it would secure your health in the long run.

I am going to share with you my experience of recycling / green living in the UK. I will write specifically about my experience in London, as I have been living and working here for more than 7 years.
Before I came to the UK, the only thing I recycled in Singapore was paper/newspaper — my family keeps these unwanted paper at home until the ‘garang guni’ (or rag and bone man) comes door to door to collect our unwanted recyclables.

Other than being Good Friday (in Singapore), today is also Earth Day – a day to remember the importance of living sustainably and responsibly, in protection of the one great gift we have received — our planet Earth.
Singapore has a long way to go in terms of environmental consciousness. Many of our people are too busy with building our future — our work/studies and our families/friends. There may also be some of us who are busy with killing time. So there is little time for the Earth.

On 17 Apr 2011, my hubby and I pulled ourselves out of bed much earlier than usual and headed toward town (Marina Boulevard area) to take part in “Run 350”. Other than wanting to lend our support for this “one-and-only-10km-eco-run-in-Singapore”, we also wanted to see for ourselves the eco efforts that were currently taking place in Singapore.
For background, the run was named as such to remind everyone of the need to keep carbon emissions in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million (ppm). This effort is crucial if we are to ensure mankind’s long term survival on this planet. Currently, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is about 390ppm, and the excessive green house gas is contributing to serious problems like global warming and climate change. Hence, the run seeks to create environmental awareness on how all of us could reduce our carbon emissions and lead more eco-friendly lives, in a fun way.

This entry on efforts to recycle batteries is a follow-up to my previous entry.
I got a chance to speak to Alvin from Battizer the other day. He was very kind to answer some of the burning questions I had about recycling batteries.

Sigh, things are not made to last.
Within a span of 2 months, two of my hair clips broke. Actually, it is only the tiny flimsy springs in them that broke. The remaining parts are still very much in good working conditions. I intend to try to repair it, but it would mean sourcing for the correct type of wire to recreate the spring components. If that is not possible, I might have to send the remaining parts for recycling.

The global warming controversy — whether global warming is real and whether it is caused by humans — is very intriguing. There’s lots of emotions and opinions involved.
Given the nature of Truth in Life — Life is simply too large to be fully comprehended by Man, so understandably, Life’s Truth is beyond Man’s grasp — there is no way we will be able to know the Truth about global warming. All we might have, even with our technological advances and science today, is probably a glimpse at a piece of the puzzle of the Truth.

By some coincidence, my hubby and I were introduced to the movie, The 11th Hour, which is produced and narrated by Leonardo Dicaprio, and discusses the future of our planet given the way people are treating it now. The movie is not exactly new, as it was released in 2007, but we only learnt about it recently.
The movie documentary left us with many feelings.
